Review a student's conversations

When your students work with an assistant, you can open any one of them and read the whole conversation, then review the feedback before it reaches the student. The view is read-only, so you see exactly what happened without changing anything, and you stay the one who decides what feedback a student gets. This is how you keep an eye on a class without sitting next to every screen.

This takes a few minutes per student. You do not need any technical knowledge.

Before you start

You need an assistant your students have used and that you are allowed to manage. The list of students lives on that assistant's overview, so open the assistant you shared with the class. A student only has feedback to review once they have submitted a session, so if someone has not submitted anything yet, you can still read their conversation, but there is nothing to send back yet.

Open a student's conversations

Work through these steps in order. Step 4 only applies once a student has submitted a session, so skip it if you are just reading along.

1. Open the assistant and find your students

Open the assistant your class has been using. Its overview lists every student who has used it, one row each, with columns for last activity, Last submitted, and Feedback. Sort by Last submitted to see who is waiting on you, or use the search box to jump straight to one student.

2. Open a student's conversations

Click a student's row, or hover over it and click Open. This opens their most recent conversation in a read-only view. If the student has more than one conversation, the sidebar lists them all, so you can switch between their sessions. If they have not started anything yet, you see a short message asking you to pick a session from the sidebar.

3. Read the conversation

Read the conversation the way the student saw it. There is no message box, because this view is read-only: you can read every message but you cannot type into the student's chat or change what was said. Scroll through to see how the student worked and where they got stuck.

4. Review and submit the feedback

When a student has submitted a session, Sokra drafts feedback you can review: Strengths, Opportunities of growth, a Follow-up, and a criteria level. You can edit any of these and add your own note under Your feedback. When it reads the way you want, click Submit feedback to send your reviewed version to the student. The button stays off and reads No changes until you change something; once you submit, it shows Already submitted.

Tips

  • Sort the students list by Last submitted so the students waiting on your review rise to the top.
  • Read before you edit. The draft feedback is a starting point, so skim the conversation first, then adjust the parts that do not match what you saw.
  • Add a short note under Your feedback in your own voice. One specific line from you often lands harder than a long list of points.

Data & safety

You can open conversations only for assistants you manage, and the view is read-only, so reading a student's chat never changes it and never sends the student a message on its own. Your reviewed feedback reaches the student after you click Submit feedback, not before, so you stay in control of what gets sent. Sokra drafts the feedback, and as with any answer it can be wrong, so read the conversation and adjust the draft rather than sending it unchanged. A student's conversations are their work, so treat what you read there the same way you would treat anything a student hands in.

Troubleshooting

I do not see a Submit feedback button. It appears only when there is feedback to review, which means the student has submitted that session. If they have not submitted yet, there is nothing to send back. Read the conversation and check again once they submit.

The Submit feedback button is greyed out. It stays off until you change something and reads No changes when your edits match the draft. Edit a field or add a note under Your feedback, and it turns on. After you submit, it reads Already submitted and stays off for that session.

I opened a student and the conversation will not load. You see a short message instead of the chat. You may not have access to that session, or it may no longer exist. Check that the assistant is one you manage, and try another session from the sidebar.

I cannot type a reply in the student's chat. That is expected. The view is read-only so you can review without changing the student's work. Use Your feedback to add a note, then Submit feedback to send it.
